Understanding the Differences Between the Global Methodist Church and the United Methodist Churches

In recent years, Methodism has experienced a significant shift, particularly with the emergence of the Global Methodist Church (GMC). This new denomination was created through a separation of the traditionalist and progressive leadership and clergy of the

United Methodist Church (UMC).

So what are the differences between the Global Methodist Church and the United Methodist Churches?

Theological Foundations

The GMC adheres to a traditionalist interpretation of Christian doctrine. This includes a firm stance on issues such as the authority of Scripture, the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman, and upholding the traditional understanding of

morality and sin. The GMC emphasizes a commitment to what it considers the orthodox

Christian faith, rooted in the Wesleyan tradition.

In contrast, the UMC has adopted a progressive theological stance. This is evident in its

progressive approach to LGBTQ+ issues, including the ordination of openly gay clergy

and the sanctioning of same-sex marriages. The UMC’s broader theological approach is

also evident with its progressive approach concerning celibacy in singleness, pro-choice

advocacy, and the recognition of multiple genders.

Organizational Structure

The GMC has been designed to be more streamlined and less bureaucratic than its

predecessor. It aims for a model that empowers local congregations and reduces the

hierarchical complexity seen in the UMC.

In contrast, the UMC operates with a more complex and centralized structure. It has a

system of conferences, boards and episcopal leaders that govern the local church

operations. This structure results in a higher degree of institutional oversight, which can

stifle the local church.

Mission and Vision

The GMC emphasizes a return to the core mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ.

It seeks to prioritize discipleship, church planting, and evangelism, aiming to create a

transformed soul which leads to a transformed world.

In contrast, the UMC has prioritized social justice. This includes a strong emphasis on

social justice reform, environmental stewardship, and LGBTQIA affirmation. While it also

values discipleship and evangelism, the UMC's mission is often expressed through its

engagement with social justice issues and its efforts to bring about systemic change in

society rather than the individual soul.
