Take Up Your Cross Daily

Take up your cross to follow Jesus. Luke 9:23

Scripture: "Then he said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.'" (Luke 9:23)

In the world today, many perceive the concept of a cross as a symbol of peace and salvation, and it indeed is. However, in Jesus' time, a cross symbolized nothing but pain, suffering, and death. When Jesus talked about taking up the cross daily, He was calling His disciples - and all of us - to a path of self-denial, obedience, and surrender.

Jesus' call isn't just for a one-time decision. It's a daily, conscious commitment to deny ourselves, our desires, and our plans, and to embrace His will. This is a challenging call but it's also a necessary one. By taking up our cross daily, we are reminded to live selflessly and to serve others as Jesus did.

To take up your cross is to recognize that our lives are not about our desires, ambitions, or dreams. Instead, it's about God's plans and purposes. It's about allowing God to work through us for His glory. When we live this way, we can experience the fullness of joy and satisfaction that comes from following Christ and knowing Him more intimately.

It's not a call to suffering for its own sake, but a call to follow Christ, no matter the cost. It's a path that leads to the deepest joy and the highest purpose, even amidst trials and hardships.

Taking up our cross daily may sound like a heavy burden, but Jesus assures us in Matthew 11:30 that, "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." This does not mean that the journey will be free from troubles. Rather, it assures us that Jesus is with us, helping us carry our cross every step of the way.

We must remember, the cross is not just a symbol of suffering, but also of victory. Jesus endured the cross because of the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). In the same way, as we take up our cross daily, we can be assured that our labor is not in vain. There is eternal joy and reward awaiting us in Christ Jesus.

Today, let's make the choice to pick up our cross, surrender our will to God's, and follow Him. As we do, we'll find our lives marked by peace, purpose, and a deep, enduring joy that comes only from walking in the path of Christ.

Prayer: "Dear Lord, help us to take up our cross daily, denying our own desires to follow You. Grant us the strength to live for You and not for ourselves. We trust in Your promise that Your yoke is easy, and Your burden is light. Amen."
