Introduction: Embracing God's Grace Amidst Our Unworthiness**

We’ve all been there—those moments when the weight of our sins feels too heavy, when our hearts are burdened with the thought that we are unworthy of God’s love. The feeling of unworthiness is not uncommon among believers, especially when we come face to face with the holiness of God and the sacrifice of Jesus. Yet, this very feeling, as heavy as it may be, can lead us to a deeper understanding of God’s immeasurable grace and love. Today, let's reflect on what it means to feel unworthy and how we can move from a place of self-condemnation to one of divine acceptance.

Acknowledging Our Unworthiness

The apostle Paul writes on parchment.
The Apostle Paul writes about Feeling Unworthy Before God in a letter to the Corinthians.

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, addresses the issue of worthiness, particularly in the context of Communion. He criticizes the church in Corinth for their hypocrisy and division during the Agape Feast, a meal that was meant to symbolize unity and love among believers. They had turned it into an occasion for exclusion, where the rich feasted while the poor went hungry. Paul’s rebuke reminds us that the real unworthiness lies not in our sins, but in our failure to recognize and confess them.

As we approach the Lord’s table, it’s natural to feel unworthy. After all, Communion is a holy act, a means of grace where we remember Christ’s sacrifice for our sins. The feeling of unworthiness stems from our awareness of our imperfections and shortcomings. Yet, this very awareness is what brings us closer to God’s heart. It is when we acknowledge our sins and seek His forgiveness that we are truly worthy—not because of our righteousness, but because of His grace.

God’s Love for the Unworthy

Romans 5:8 tells us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This is the heart of the Gospel—God’s love is not conditional upon our worthiness. If it were, none of us would ever be able to stand before Him. Instead, God’s love is extended to us precisely because we are unworthy. It is in our brokenness that His grace is made perfect.

Consider the example of Jesus sharing the Last Supper with His disciples, including Judas, who would soon betray Him. Jesus knew the hearts of His disciples; He knew their doubts, fears, and impending failures. Yet, He still offered them His body and blood as a sign of His love and sacrifice. This act of grace shows us that God’s invitation to Communion, to fellowship with Him, is open to all—especially to those who feel unworthy.

The Path from Unworthiness to Grace

Feeling unworthy before God should not lead us to withdraw from His presence but should draw us closer to Him. In 1 Corinthians 11:28, Paul encourages believers to examine themselves before partaking in Communion. This examination is not about achieving perfection but about recognizing our need for God’s grace. It’s about coming to the table with a humble heart, knowing that we are sinners saved by grace.

Our pastor recently emphasized in his sermon that Communion is a time for personal reflection and acknowledgment of our sins. It is a moment to understand that our worthiness comes not from being sinless but from our willingness to confess and seek God’s forgiveness. When we feel unworthy, it’s an opportunity to deepen our faith, to remember that God’s love is greater than our sins, and to embrace the grace that He freely offers.

Conclusion: Embracing God’s Invitation

As we reflect on our feelings of unworthiness, let us remember that Communion is not for the perfect but for the repentant. It is a means of grace, a tangible expression of God’s love for sinners like you and me. When you feel unworthy, let that feeling lead you to God, not away from Him. Approach His table with reverence, humility, and gratitude, knowing that you are loved beyond measure.

Are you feeling unworthy before God? If so, you're actually on the right path. Go to Him, he's waiting to restore you.

Let us pray: Lord, we come before You as sinners, aware of our unworthiness but grateful for Your grace. Help us to embrace Your love, to acknowledge our sins, and to trust in Your forgiveness. May we find our worth not in ourselves but in Your endless love and mercy. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

1. Have you ever felt unworthy of God’s love? How did you respond to that feeling?

2. What does Communion mean to you personally, especially in light of your unworthiness?

3. How can you better acknowledge and seek forgiveness for your sins in your daily walk with God?

This devotional is a call to embrace God’s love even when we feel unworthy. It’s a reminder that His grace is sufficient, that His invitation to His table is open to all who recognize their need for Him. May we find comfort and strength in His love, knowing that our worthiness comes from Him alone.
